What Happened While You Were Windsurfing This Weekend

"Yep. Guess I should have eaten my spinach."

  • Tiger Woods surrendered a 54-hole lead in a major championship for the first time in his career, bogeying the final two holes to lose the PGA Championship by three shots to Y.E. Yang (-8 for the week). Yang, of South Korea, took the lead with this eagle on the 14th. The first Asian player to win a major, Yang was -2 on the day to Woods' +3.
  • Usain Bolt set a world record with a 9.58 second 100 meter run at the IAAF World Championships in Berlin. Bolt is the only man to ever run a sub-9.7 100, and now is now the only man to have run a sub-9.6. Tyson Gay ran a 9.71--the third-fastest time ever recorded--to finish second and set the U.S. record.
  • In NFL pre-season action, the Lions got their first win since last pre-season (when they went 4-0), defeating the Falcons, 27-26, on a last-second field goal by Jason Hanson. Top draft pick Matt Stafford went 7 of 14 for 114 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT. Detroit fans, book your Super Bowl trips now!
  • On Saturday, David Wright (Mets) and Ian Kinsler (Rangers) were both beaned, and Hiroki Kuroda (Dodgers) was nailed in the head by a line drive. Kinsler was the only one of the three to get up under his own power. Wright and Kuroda spent the night in the hospital, and Wright may be out for the rest of the year. Meanwhile...
  • Garrett Hartley, the Saints' kicker--for now--will serve a four-game suspension for a positive drug test. He said it was Adderall, which he used to stay awake on late-night training camp drives.
  • Roy Jones, Jr, destroyed Jeff Lacy Saturday night, going so far as to hold conversations with ringside fans as he was tied up with Lacy. His next match looks to be against Australian Danny Green, who has 33 knockouts in 37 wins.

Why you should care: One of the longest-tenured anchors at ESPN, she's been bringing you the day's top sports news and highlights for the past 17 years on SportsCenter. Check out Linda's website and memoir.

What's the best part of your job? I get to talk about sports! And get paid for it!

How much have things changed since you started at SportsCenter? It's much harder to find a parking space [at our office] in Bristol [laughs]. The biggest change is "The Bottom Line." We give away the final scores and news before we have a chance to tell the viewers.

When you started there were very few women in the biz. Do you think you're a pioneer? I do. When I graduated in 1981, there were only a handful of women in sports and they all worked for newspapers. I'm really happy women are getting more opportunities today, but it's quality not quantity that's important.

You were a goalie on the women's ice hockey team at SUNY-Osewego. Were you a stand-up, butterfly or hybrid goalie? Back in the day, I was a stack your pads goalie. Now, I'm working on the butterfly. So I'm half-and-half.

Mr. Fantasy

Rookie RBs are Best Insurance Policy for Your Draft
One certainty in fantasy football is that one of your top draft picks will disappoint you. Bernard Pollard rolls on Tom Brady's knee in week one and your season is over. To insure yourself against calamity select four or five rookie RBs in your upcoming draft. As more teams move to a two-back system, even 3rd- and 4th-round rookies play right away. Worst case: You have a spare RB to use as trade bait or insert in your lineup without having to trade a core player who is actually producing. This strategy also allows you to go after top QBs and WRs early and not worry about grabbing a so-called top RB from last year. Instead of drafting a backup team defense or old blood, add the potential of Shady McCoy, Shonn Greene and their ilk to your roster. -- Scotty Walker
